Driving in Albania: a guide for visitors

Plan your rental pickup, driving days, parking and car return.

Choose the car around your itinerary

Check how many passengers and bags you need to carry, especially with a small car. Look at transmission, pickup and drop-off points, included mileage, deposit and the supplier’s own terms before comparing totals.

Prepare for pickup

Check the supplier’s document and payment requirements and the hours for your arrival. Save the pickup address and booking reference. At handover, record the car’s condition, fuel level and mileage with the supplier.

Plan the route one leg at a time

Allow extra time for towns, scenic stops and parking. If a route goes into the mountains or onto an unpaved section, verify it with the accommodation and check the rental supplier’s conditions for that route. Ask where to leave the car when visiting a historic center.

Arrange return and extras in advance

Confirm the drop-off point, fuel arrangement and handover time. Ask the supplier for written confirmation before adding another driver or planning a cross-border leg. Leave enough time for the return inspection before your flight.
